New population data proves Australia is growing for broke, following immigration debate.
Sustainable Population Australia
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals that Australia’s population expanded by 392,700 in the year to 30 March 2026, 292,100 of which from net oversees migration, lifting population towards 28 million, which was passed in early June 2026.
Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) observes that Australia’s infrastructure and natural environment remain under severe, worsening pressure as immigration driven population growth continues to boost total numbers by 1 million people every 30 months.

Quotes attributable to Mr Strachan:
“An expanding population lifts inflationary pressures throughout the economy and has reduced the quality of life for people whose families have lived on this continent for generations, as well as those who are recent arrivals.”
“What is the purpose of population growth if, as experience demonstrates, it destroys quality of life by driving urban sprawl and suburban infill, causes skill shortages, drives real wages down and destroys labour productivity?”
“At its present pace of expansion Australia will host 29 million people by January 2029. Population growth drives a never-ending requirement for power and water, as well as supporting infrastructure, including dwellings, schools, hospitals, roads and railway lines. When will enough be enough?”
“Australia’s immigration program should be high-skill, selective, manageable and always maintained at levels that fit comfortably within the economy’s capacity for housing, infrastructure, water supply and its ecological, long-term carrying capacity.”

Quotes attributable to Mr Bayliss:
“It is delusional to think that it is possible to continue building for a rapidly growing population without imposing further damage on an already degraded environment. For example, a recent UNEP report warns that, by 2060, demand for sand used in building alone could increase by up to 45%.”
“A push to build 1.2 million new homes in under five years, has further increased clearance of native vegetation, resulting in a ‘trees vs house’ debate. However, this conflict of interest would not be happening if the federal government was not self-perpetuating a huge demand for new housing through its aggressive drive for high immigration.”
“On Monday, a panel on the ‘ABC’s National Forum on Immigration’ was stacked with Big Australia enthusiasts. The discussion was narrowly focused on the ‘culture debate’. As is so often the case in this debate, there was virtually no discussion on the environmental or economic costs of high population growth."
"Sustainable Population Australia remains one of the few organisations advocating for a ‘third approach’ to this debate which Australia desperately needs.”
