Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Joe Coory and Buderim Private Hospital have introduced a new surgical technology to the Sunshine Coast, performing four reverse total shoulder replacement procedures on 6 August using the Stryker MAKO  SmartRobotics™ platform.

Dr Coory is among a small group of surgeons across Australia given early access to the MAKO shoulder application, which has recently been released for use in shoulder surgery after being established in hip and knee procedures. Only a handful of other hospitals in the world have completed procedures with this platform.

“We’re pleased to have the opportunity to offer this technology on the Sunshine Coast,” Dr Coory said. “The platform allows for detailed pre-operative planning and provides intraoperative guidance to assist in accurate implant placement. It also reconfirms that the Sunshine Coast is a growing area for both health development and technological advancement.”

The MAKO robotic system uses 3D CT-based planning and intraoperative haptic guidance, enabling surgeons to operate with real-time feedback. While still in the early stages of adoption worldwide, its application to shoulder replacement offers potential benefits for surgical accuracy and reproducibility. Having the platform permanently available at Buderim Private Hospital means it will be accessible for ongoing use in eligible cases.
