NSW Premier Breaks Ground on $2.5bn Burwood Place Development – Sydney’s Ultimate “5-Minute Neighbourhood”
Burwood, NSW – A new chapter in the evolution of Sydney’s Inner West commenced today with the groundbreaking ceremony for Burwood Place, a staged $2.5 billion transit-oriented development set to become Sydney’s most connected urban community.
The official sod turn was performed by NSW Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully, alongside Burwood Mayor John Faker, Strathfield MP Jason Yat-sen Li, and Federal Member for Reid Ms Sally Sitou.
Set in the lively Burwood town centre, Burwood Place boasts a perfect fusion of retail, residential, commercial, civic and recreational spaces to support a dynamic and growing community.
Developed by Holdmark in consultation with Burwood Council and the local community, Burwood Place is designed to serve as both a civic heart and an economic catalyst for the Inner West. Built around the concept of a “5-minute neighbourhood”, the precinct will give residents easy access to everything they need within a short walk.
It will also deliver thousands of new jobs steps away from Burwood Train Station and minutes from the planned Burwood North Metro, part of the Sydney Metro West line due to open in 2032.
Once complete, Burwood Place will inject over $750 million into the local economy every year. It will transform two CBD blocks along Railway Parade and feature:
- 1,041 new homes across four buildings, including 5% affordable and 10% adaptable
- 5,000+ sqm of public space, including a town square and urban park
- A new library and Cultural House for community use
- 27,000 sqm of retail, medical, and fresh food space
- 14,000 sqm of commercial space, including an A-grade office tower
- An entertainment precinct
- Seven basement parking levels with EV charging stations.
Strategically Connected for the Future
Ideally positioned midway between Sydney and Parramatta CBDs, Burwood Place is set to become a landmark urban hub, offering seamless east-west transport links.
Holdmark CEO, Kevin Nassif said Burwood Place will energise the heart of Burwood for locals and visitors while supporting State and Federal government housing targets.
“This is more than a development, it’s a reflection of Burwood’s bold, inclusive vision for the future,” Mr Nassif said. “Holdmark values the shared vision for Burwood’s tomorrow -- to shape a connected, sustainable and safe community that embraces and celebrates its culture and diversity. This project will deliver on all fronts.
“It brings together best-practice urban design and community-led placemaking that will see it set a new benchmark for mixed-use urban hubs in Sydney.
“We are proud to have worked closely with Burwood Council and the community to design a visionary, people-centred project that will become a template for inclusive and connected communities where people gather to live, work and play,” Mr Nassif said.
Designed by a team of award-winning architects, Burwood Place will include the transformation of a Council carpark into a thriving urban park and Culture House, and the creation of Burwood Lane – a pedestrian-friendly walkway, which will create a safe connection close to Burwood Road to the new library and civic core.
Project Timeline
Burwood Place will be delivered in stages over the next six years, commencing with the construction of the new urban park and Culture House, supermarket and retail areas, commercial and residential areas, a 200-place childcare centre (subject to approvals) and a new specialist medical precinct.
The project will create more than 5,000 new jobs, including 1,700 during construction and a further 3,300 once the precinct is completed.
