Oxfam issues warning about "dire threat to civilians" as fighting escalates in Yemen

As fighting intensifies in Yemen, Oxfam warns that further escalation risks worsening an already catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with civilians facing increased displacement, hunger and loss of life.

Ferran Puig, Oxfam Yemen’s Country Director, said: 

“Recent escalations present a dire threat to civilians in Yemen, who have already endured more than a decade of conflict and humanitarian crisis. The humanitarian impact is already severe. Civilians have been killed and injured, and people from more than 5,600 households have already been displaced in just a few days of fighting.

“Two thirds of the population in Yemen needs humanitarian assistance, and thousands are facing famine. Further military escalations will deepen hunger and displacement and disrupt the humanitarian assistance millions depend on to survive.

 “Civilians’ lives must be protected, with safe access to food, healthcare and essential services. Humanitarian organisations and workers must be able to reach and support those in need.

“Every Yemeni life is precious. Conflict parties must explore all possible avenues towards a peaceful solution to prevent further loss of life.

“The international community must support efforts towards a peaceful solution and use its influence to de-escalate tensions and urgently restore and sustain vital aid to the country. Recent aid cuts have devastated lives. These cuts must be reversed and aid delivered to the millions of people in need.”
