Parents always ask Susanne Gervay when, how, in what way can you tell children how they are born. 

 

Parents keep asking for a go-to-book to make kids feel safe and accepted. Family is complex with – adoption, single parenting, LGBTQ, multi-racial, step-families, multi-generational, nuclear. IVF in all its forms, other.

Susanne Gervay’s granddaughter was born through IVF. There are so many challenges. Tory, her daughter had kidney disease diagnosed at 19. There were years of multifaceted treatments, hospitalization, dialysis. She could not carry a child without huge risks. After six IVF attempts, she went on the journey of surrogacy with her egg and a donated sperm donor.

 

Tory is an advocate for funding hospitals for kidney disease. The kidney clinic at The Children’s Hospital has been sadly closed and children dispatched to Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital. The dialysis machines are breaking down. She could not survive without the kidney team. She could not have had a have a baby without their extraordinary care.
