Parliamentary inquiry on link between domestic violence and suicide to hold further public hearings
House of Representatives
The Social Policy and Legal Affairs Committee is holding hearings over two days commencing today in Melbourne as part of its inquiry into the relationship between domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV) and suicide. These hearings follow the Committee’s earlier public hearings in Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney.
‘The Committee has been honoured to receive evidence from lived experience victim-survivors of domestic, family and sexual violence. These harrowing experiences must be understood within the framework of systems, services and social structures to reduce preventable deaths, including suicide,’ Committee Chair, Ms Louise Miller-Frost MP said.
Ms Miller-Frost said, ‘These hearings will provide the Committee with a range of expert views and allow the Committee to speak to experts and service providers who have been informed by both their own observations and the voices of with lived experience’.
Observers are reminded that these hearings will cover material that is distressing. Please note the Committee and secretariat are unable to provide counselling, advice, or support for individuals.
