Peppa Pig’s baby sister Meets Guess How I Was Born?

Mummy Pig has nailed it. Daddy Pig has nailed it too. The pregnancy, birth and arrival of Evie is beautiful and right there on the screen and books.

Cartoon of a pig in a rocking chairThe clever creators of Peppa Pig have explained it to little people and parents. Children don’t need explicit instructions. They need the basics and truth. A baby is delivered from Mummy Pig’s tummy and there is joy and family.

Guess How I Was Born? nails it too. It goes to the next stage recognising our diverse society. Guess How I Was Born? is the first picture book of its kind where everyone is included – a family like Peppa’s, families who have adopted, step-children, LGBTQ, multi racial, multi-generational, single parent … and IVF.

Who can believe IVF is controversial in this day and age?

We advocate for diversity and inclusion. Yet many parents are scared to admit to IVF. There are some who face cultural reasons, as it brings shame in certain ethnic groups. There can be awkward conversations and unsolicited opinions. ‘Why didn’t you adopt instead?’ Yet we know that adoption is very difficult with many years waiting often for no child. There can be disapproval from some religions. Parents are ashamed of infertility. It can be emotionally embarrassing to need IVF help. Sharing can be very private and makes you feel vulnerable. IVF is such an arduous process and those who go through it are committed and strong. It is not simple to do it or to share.

Infertility is one of the great challenges in creating a family. One in 8 face infertility. IVF gives hope. 1 in 18 children are born through IVF. There are many scenarios of how to conceive through egg or sperm donation or both, older women are less fertile, surrogacy, endless IVF failures stressing relationships with huge emotional, financial and social costs. Science has become a welcome but secret partner to birth.

A baby is a happy occurrence. It is time to UNLOCK the silence. Go the next step. Guess How I Was Born? is that step for the parent and child to celebrate their family in any way it happens.
