Perth Mosque Responds to Foiled Plot with Open Invitation for Unity

In the wake of the recently foiled terrorist plot in Western Australia — which allegedly included places of worship among its targets — the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Perth acknowledges the deep concern felt across our community.

For Australian Muslims, mosques are sanctuaries which are places of reflection, spiritual growth and peace. To learn that such sacred spaces could be considered targets here in our own city has understandably left some feeling unsettled and apprehensive.

This anxiety comes within a broader national context, following recent acts of violence that have shaken communities across Australia. When hatred is normalised — whether through reckless rhetoric, online hostility or extremist ideology — its effects ripple far beyond words.

Despite stringent cyber laws aimed at curbing online hate speech and incitement, legislation alone cannot eliminate division. Meaningful change requires moral leadership and personal responsibility.

The Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, taught:

“Show mercy to His servants and do not wrong them by your tongue or your hand or by any other means, and strive for the welfare of God’s creation.”

These words remain profoundly relevant today. The world does not need more hostility — it needs respect, compassion and understanding.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Perth appreciate the strong and reassuring response from WA Premier Roger Cook and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, whose statements have helped calm fears. However, moments such as this also present an opportunity to reinforce unity not only through words, but through shared presence.

In that spirit, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Perth will host one of the largest Iftar gatherings in Western Australia at Nasir Mosque — Perth’s largest mosque — on Sunday 8 March 2026.

The Annual Iftar Dinner attracts guests from all walks of life, including interfaith leaders, community representatives and government officials. Especially in the current circumstances, the presence of elected leaders, espacially our premiere, Mr Roger Cook, would send a powerful message of solidarity, reassurance and shared commitment to social harmony.

Australia’s strength lies in its unity. Now is the time to demonstrate it.
