PowerSync Technologies scales up with acquisition of VIOTAS Australia’s 227 MW industrial portfolio

The deal brings one of Australia’s largest grid flexibility portfolios to PowerSync Technologies and accelerates its push towards 2GW by 2030

Sydney, 5 November 2026: Australian energy-technology company PowerSync Technologies has acquired VIOTAS Australia Pty Ltd, the local entity of Irish smart-grid technology company VIOTAS. The deal adds national scale and an established portfolio of industrial customer relationships building on PowerSync’s proprietary technology platform and market access.

Since entering the Australian market in 2020, VIOTAS Australia has grown to 227 megawatts (MW) of flexible demand participating in the National Electricity Market (NEM), the grid serving eastern and southern Australia. The acquisition brings that portfolio to PowerSync Technologies, along with VIOTAS Australia’s team, industrial customers and operating capability.

Flexible demand is electricity use a business can briefly reduce or shift for short periods when the grid needs support, such as during a hot afternoon when demand is high. PowerSync enables eligible businesses to earn revenue from that flexibility, as well as from batteries or on-site generation, by managing the technology and market participation on their behalf, from bidding and dispatch to compliance and settlement.

Australia’s electricity system increasingly depends on flexible capacity to balance supply and demand, particularly as more renewable energy enters the grid. That capacity can come from industrial operations, behind-the-meter batteries, grid-scale storage, on-site generation and other controllable infrastructure.

By unlocking flexibility in existing infrastructure, PowerSync helps businesses generate additional revenue while reducing pressure on the electricity grid during periods of high demand, potentially helping address the network and market conditions that contribute to higher electricity prices.

David Naismith, Founder and CEO of PowerSync, said the acquisition will expand the company’s ability to help industrial businesses capitalise on their existing energy infrastructure.

“As more renewable energy enters the grid, the ability to adjust electricity use at the right moment is becoming increasingly valuable, and industrial businesses are well placed to provide it,” he said.

“The acquisition of VIOTAS Australia represents a step change in our scale and growth, expanding the flexible capacity we manage and deepening our industrial customer base. The continued scaling of our platform across behind-the-meter and grid-scale assets places us at the forefront of current and emerging markets and expands our ability to deliver innovative products and services to our customers.”

The acquisition supports PowerSync’s strategic target of coordinating 2 gigawatts (GW) of flexible capacity by 2030, as the company pursues growth across the NEM and Western Australia’s Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM).

Data centres are also a growing focus, with PowerSync’s full compliance stack covering edge, cloud and market, helping operators prepare for grid connection requirements, monitor ongoing compliance and earn revenue from eligible flexibility. Once connected, PowerSync manages the technology and market complexity on the customer’s behalf, ensuring participation remains within site constraints and does not compromise core operations.

The companies have also signed a technology memorandum of understanding (MOU). A key focus of the collaboration will be combining global market and technology insights to broaden PowerSync’s behind-the-meter capabilities for Australian customers. The continuing relationship with VIOTAS brings together an exceptional depth of market and technology experience developed across Australia, Ireland and the United States.

For existing VIOTAS Australia customers, contracts remain with the acquired business and established contacts will continue. Sites will move progressively to PowerSync technology with VIOTAS support, and any changes will be coordinated with each customer.

Professor Paddy Finn, Chief Executive Officer of VIOTAS, said the sale was the right next step for a business VIOTAS built from the ground up.

“Six years ago we built VIOTAS Australia from a standing start, and it became one of the largest grid flexibility portfolios in Australia,” he said.

“As VIOTAS increases its focus on growth in Ireland and the USA, this acquisition will serve as a springboard for PowerSync’s ambitious growth in Australia.”

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
