RACGP pays tribute to Dr Albert Foreman OAM

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and patients of Dr Albert Foreman OAM, who passed away on 20 August, aged 95. 

Dr Foreman was a much-loved Territorian, RACGP member and dedicated general practitioner who continued caring for patients until his retirement in June this year, marking 50 years of medical practice. 

RACGP NT Chair Dr Sam Heard said Dr Foreman’s extraordinary career and lifelong commitment to his patients and the Northern Territory would leave a lasting legacy. 

“Albert Foreman was an extraordinary doctor who dedicated his life to caring for people, particularly those living in the NT,” Dr Heard said. 

“His career was remarkable in so many ways. He began studying medicine at the age of 40, after first working as a civil engineer in the Northern Territory, and went on to practise medicine across Australia and internationally. 

“He worked in Darwin as a special interest GP for a long time. For generations of Territorians, particularly those needing ear, nose and throat (ENT) care, Albert was a trusted and compassionate doctor. Even after reaching an age when most people would have long since retired, Albert continued to practice in the community offering ENT treatment. 

“His contribution to medicine was rightly recognised with an OAM in 2017. But his greatest legacy will be the countless people he cared for and the difference he made to their lives. 

“He had even treated my 100-year-old father a couple of years ago, with much more to discuss than the typical doctor and patient. 

“On behalf of the RACGP and GPs across the Northern Territory, I pay tribute to Albert’s extraordinary life and service. He will be deeply missed.” 

Dr Foreman’s funeral will be held today at Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Darwin.
