Recognition of Palestine: Now let's match words with action

Senator Fatima Payman

Statement on Palestine

Today marks a historic and long overdue moment: Australia has formally recognised the independent and sovereign State of Palestine, joining more than 150 nations across the globe.

For years, the Palestinian community, the wider Australian public, and even many within the Labor Party itself have been calling for this recognition. Today, their calls have finally been answered.

I welcome this step and congratulate Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for standing up to Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump, and all those who believe Palestinians are not entitled to the dignity of a homeland. Sometimes standing up to powerful men and being on the right side of history requires real courage. And today, the Prime Minister has shown it.

But recognition alone is not enough. Unless Australia also stops arming Israel and enabling its war machine, there won’t be much left of Palestine to recognise. The ongoing bombardment and starvation of civilians in Gaza cannot be met with hollow words and symbolic gestures. We must match today’s announcement with an immediate end to weapons exports, military cooperation, and unconditional support for a government that continues to defy international law.

This recognition is a victory for justice and peace, but it will only have meaning if we now use our voice, our diplomacy, and our policies to push for a genuine lasting solution – one that ends the illegal occupation, delivers security for both peoples, and upholds the humanity of all.

History is watching, and today Australia has taken a step in the right direction. Let’s not stop here.
