RFNSW urges freight community to prepare for increased Bathurst traffic

Road Freight NSW (RFNSW) is urging freight operators and customers to prepare for increased traffic during the Bathurst 1000, with more motorists and the ongoing Great Western Highway repairs likely to compound congestion and disruption along the Victoria Pass detour.

RFNSW said reviewing schedules, setting realistic delivery windows and preparing for longer journeys would help the freight community manage the weekend safely.

RFNSW CEO Simon O’Hara acknowledged the additional disruption comes at an already difficult time for the industry.

“We understand freight businesses are under considerable pressure, and the highway closure is adding time, cost and complexity to the job of keeping goods moving,” Mr O’Hara said.

“With more vehicles heading to and from Bathurst, and the end of school holidays this weekend,  planning freight movements and allowing additional time for travel is the best practical step operators can take to manage any disruption.

“That includes allowing flexibility in delivery schedules and ensuring congestion does not compromise drivers’ rest breaks, because at the end of the day, getting there and back safely is most important.

“We understand the commercial pressures, but no delivery is worth putting a driver or another road user at risk.

RFNSW continues to work with the NSW Government on all freight matters, including the timely completion of the Great Western Highway repairs and the impact of the closure on transport businesses.

“Restoring this vital freight connection remains a priority, and we will continue advocating for the repairs to be completed as quickly and safely as possible,” Mr O’Hara said.

“In the meantime, preparation and co-operation across the supply chain will be essential to managing the extra volume this weekend.
