The winners of Thornbury’s annual scarecrow festival will be announced at 2pm on Sunday 19 October at 87 Rossmoyne Street, Thornbury.

 

Rossmoyne residents group spokesperson Holly Barker said: “The Rossmoyne Street Scarecrow Festival has spread out to other streets across Darebin.

 

“Residents demonstrate remarkable creativity and new scarecrows seem to pop up every day in the runup to the announcement.

 

“There is Freddy the Fruit Fly, who blew in from Queensland, and who claims to be friendly. Enderman, a scary looking character from Minecraft, a tribute to Jane Goodall who utterly changed our understanding of humanity’s closest relatives and a very silent Feathers McGraw from Wallace and Gromit.”

 

“The first scarecrows this year were created by pupils at St Mary’s Primary School, dubbed Swim Shady and Tuna Swift, they urge us to reconsider how we view the world (‘What do you Sea?, they ask).

 

The scarecrow festival is a much-loved element of the annual Rossmoyne Street Rummage, a 2.5km street-long garage sale that brings new life to old treasures and encourages the reduction of environmental impact through re-use. It draws thousands of people from across Melbourne seeking a bargain, a fun day out, or who just want to view the scarecrows in person.

 

Founded in 2012 by a group of residents eager to build connection and local community spirit, the Rossmoyne Rummage has grown into the cornerstone event of this special pocket of Melbourne’s inner north — a much-loved celebration of creativity, togetherness and sustainable living.

The Hon Ged Kearney MP, member for Cooper, and Darebin-based comedian Lloyd Langford will judge this year’s scarecrows and announce the winners from 2pm at 87 Rossmoyne Street.”

 

Lloyd is well known for his work with Network 10’s Have You Been Paying Attention, Thank God You’re Here and was last year’s winner of Taskmaster Australia.
