The Garvan Institute is opening its doors to the public for an exhibition revealing the hidden beauty of medical research through captivating scientific imagery.

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research will welcome the public for a celebration of science and creativity during National Science Week (9–17 August 2025). Art of Discovery, a free exhibition at Garvan’s Darlinghurst headquarters, showcases stunning scientific imagery captured by researchers across the fields of cancer, genomics and immunology.

Aligning with this year’s National Science Week theme ‘Decoding the Universe – Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language’, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the unseen beauty of medical research through immersive, large-scale illuminated displays. Each image tells a powerful story of discovery, offering fresh insights into the hidden patterns and structures that drive human health and disease.

“Art of Discovery marks a special opportunity for the public to step inside the Garvan Institute and see science in a new light. While our scientists work behind closed doors year-round, National Science Week gives us the chance to create a bridge between our research community and the public,” says Abbey Roberts, Public Engagement Officer at Garvan. “Whether you’re an art lover, a science enthusiast, or just curious about what happens within a world-class research institute, there’s something here for you.”

For those unable to attend in person, an online gallery will launch simultaneously on 11 August, providing virtual access to these remarkable scientific images. Visitors to both the physical and online exhibitions are encouraged to cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award, celebrating the image that resonates most with the public.
