Family First National Director Lyle Shelton has today questioned One Nation’s commitment to foundational pro-family values following the elevation of new South Australian MP Jason Virgo.

Mr Shelton said Mr Virgo’s past public advocacy raises serious and legitimate questions about where One Nation now stands on key cultural issues.

“Family First welcomes One Nation’s disruption of a political class that has failed and betrayed Australian families. The surge in support for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation is a clear message to the Liberals and Nationals, who deserve the electoral kicking they’ve received,” Mr Shelton said.

“However, voters are entitled to clarity. Does One Nation support marriage as being between one man and one woman? Is it onboard with Mr Virgo’s alignment with groups which advocate for harmful gender fluid indoctrination of children?

“Many social conservatives and Christians have supported One Nation but would they if they knew the party is ambivalent about marriage, family and children’s gender?”

Mr Shelton said Mr Virgo’s history of activism in favour of same-sex marriage, along with reported associations with radical political causes, appears to be at odds with the values long championed by One Nation figures such as Cory Bernardi, who played a leading role defending the definition of marriage during the 2017 national debate.

“These are not minor differences. They go to the heart of what political parties believe about family, children and the future of our society,” he said.

Mr Shelton said further questions must be asked about whether Mr Virgo’s views extend to broader ideological positions commonly associated with same-sex marriage activism.

“Does Mr Virgo, like many political activists in that movement, support the gender fluid indoctrination of children in schools?” Mr Shelton said.

“Australian families deserve to know whether One Nation is drifting on these issues or whether it will hold the line.”

Mr Shelton emphasised that Family First continues to align with many of One Nation’s policy positions, particularly on restoring affordable energy and winding back mass immigration.

“There is much common ground,” he said.

“But virtue matters. The definition of family, the protection of children, and the dignity of women and girls are not secondary issues—they are central.

“Family First will always stand unapologetically for family, faith, freedom and life.

“We will defend the dignity of every human life, protect children from harmful ideology, and uphold the rights of women and girls.”

Mr Shelton said while political realignment is underway in Australia, Family First remains the only viable minor party on the eastern seaboard consistently committed to placing the family at the centre of public policy.
