Reena Ghelani, Chief Executive Officer of child rights and humanitarian NGO Plan International will be in Port Sudan and available for media interview on the morning of Thursday 23 October between 8:30-9:30am Sudan time (6:30-7:30 GMT).

As Sudan’s brutal and protracted conflict continues, 11.8 million people have been forced from their homes both within the country and across its borders. Humanitarian conditions are deteriorating rapidly, with famine detected in five areas, acute shortages of food and medicine and a surge in cholera cases.

It will be two and a half years since the conflict in Sudan begun and Reena will be visiting displacement camps, meeting with survivors of sexual violence and children supported by Plan International’s child friendly spaces, and can talk to some of the critical humanitarian issues the country is facing.

Reena can share first-hand insights from the ground, including:

  • The escalating cholera outbreak and growing famine and malnutrition crisis
  • The critical need for child-friendly spaces to support affected children – explaining how they work and why they are crucial for children who are surviving the deep psychological effects of war
  • Devastating reports of sexual and gender-based violence taking place in this conflict
  • The urgent need to scale up humanitarian response efforts

We can also provide b-roll footage, photos (including from displacement camps) and stories of displaced girls and young women from Sudan.
