STEPS Garden Centre to close, paving the way for a new chapter

After years of plants, people, workshops, volunteers, conversations and more than a few muddy shoes, STEPS Garden Centre will close on 30 October 2026, marking the end of an important chapter and the beginning of an exciting new future.

Although the STEPS Garden Centre will close its doors, STEPS will continue its commitment to gardening, learning and community connection through plant sales at Café on George, ongoing horticulture training opportunities and an exciting new program of workshops.

Stephanie Patey, CEO of STEPS Social Business, said STEPS was proud of the impact the Garden Centre has made and grateful to the community that supported it every step of the way.

“We know this news will be disappointing for many people, and we share those feelings. The STEPS Garden Centre has always been much more than a place to buy plants. It has been a place where people could learn, contribute, connect with others and feel a genuine sense of belonging. That legacy has only been possible because of the incredible support of our community every step of the way,” Mrs Patey said.

"I would like to thank the many community members, customers, volunteers and supporters who have been part of the Garden Centre's journey. Every purchase, visit and contribution has helped support our social enterprise and create opportunities that have made a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with disability and autism," she said.

Looking ahead, STEPS plans to further develop Café on George as the heart of a vibrant food, garden and community precinct, creating new opportunities for connection, learning and social impact.

Community members are encouraged to visit the Garden Centre before its closure to stock up on plants and gardening supplies, reconnect with familiar faces and enjoy coffee or lunch at Café on George.
