Most of us have more control over our thinking than we realise.

But when we’re under pressure, facing uncertainty or caught in a difficult conversation, we often default to the same familiar patterns, even when they’re no longer working.

In his new book, Switch Thinking: The 2-Minute Switch to Boost Your Creativity, Energy and Focus (Wiley, 26 August 2026), organisational creativity expert Dr Ken Hudson introduces a practical method for changing how we think, feel and respond in real time.

Rather than asking people to transform their mindset permanently, Dr Hudson shows how a small, temporary switch in thinking can help us get unstuck, see a situation differently and discover new possibilities, in as little as two minutes.

“You have more control over your thinking than you realise,” says Dr Hudson.

“When your usual approach isn’t working, you don’t necessarily need more time, information or effort. Sometimes you simply need to pause, switch your thinking and play with another possibility for two minutes.”

Dr Hudson was inspired to develop the concept after watching a bilingual colleague seamlessly switch between English and Mandarin at a conference in Singapore. If someone could learn to switch languages on demand, he wondered, could people also learn to switch between different ways of thinking?

That question became the foundation of Switch Thinking: a practical life skill designed to help people move more easily between structured, analytical thinking and creative, imaginative thinking.

“The problem isn’t that people can’t think creatively or analytically. It’s that we often stay locked in one mode when the situation requires another,” says Dr Hudson. “Switch Thinking is about matching your thinking to the moment. You might switch from facts to feelings, from analysis to intuition, from solving a problem to preventing it, or from asking ‘Why?’ to asking ‘Why not?’”

The short timeframe is deliberate. Drawing on more than two decades of working with leaders and teams, Hudson has found that people are more willing to experiment when the change feels temporary, safe and manageable.

Switch Thinking explores how the method can be used during the moments when people need it most: in meetings, presentations, interviews, difficult conversations, creative challenges and everyday decisions.

Inside the book, readers will learn how to:

  • Move between structured “Box Mode” and imaginative “Ball Mode”

  • Get unstuck and generate new possibilities in two-minute bursts

  • Switch their perspective, focus, emotions, assumptions and questions

  • Respond with greater agility during high-pressure moments

  • Use AI as a creative collaborator, not simply an information tool

  • Make creative thinking more accessible for teams, classrooms and neurodiverse minds

Right now, people are dealing with rapid change, information overload, workplace pressure and increasingly polarised conversations, Dr Hudson believes the ability to switch perspectives is becoming an essential human skill.

Switch Thinking is a valuable resource for leaders, coaches, teachers, facilitators and parents who want to think more flexibly and perform at their best.
