Beretta reveals TV weight comment as he warns on boys' eating disorders

SYDNEY, 17 September 2026. Former Sunrise presenter Mark Beretta says a Seven
news director once told him he was putting on weight and "should have a look at
that", in an interview about why eating disorders in young men go unnoticed.

Beretta, a Butterfly Foundation ambassador and father of a 19-year-old son,
spoke on the podcast Don't Let The Old Man In, released 14 September.

"I don't think many people would be aware that young men and young Australian
males are dying through eating disorders. It's happening. And we don't talk
about it. There's nothing in the media about it."

On sport: "The notion that to be picked in the team I need to look like this, or
coach wants me to lose five kilograms."

365,000 men and boys in Australia live with an eating disorder, one in three of
all cases, and men are four times more likely to go undiagnosed (Deloitte Access
Economics 2024; Griffiths et al 2015).

Beretta also gives parents three signs to watch for.
