Swinging into spring: Playground 'designed' by kids opens at Brunswick Heads

A new playground at Brunswick Head installed by Reflections Holidays and “designed” by local kids and their parents is already an instant success with the littlies, with an event planned today to officially celebrate its arrival.

 

On Friday, September 4, a community party will be held at the new playground at Terrace Reserve Park, opposite Reflections Brunswick Heads on the New South Wales North Coast.

 

Reflections park manager Lorna Carr said the community will celebrate the official playground opening at 3pm, with celebrations including a sausage sizzle, face-painting and ice-cream deals from the local gelateria.

 

The new playground was a four-month project set into motion after the existing one was reviewed late in 2025 and deemed in need of replacement.

 

Reflections, a Crown land manager which cares for Terrace Reserve Park, commissioned a local company to provide three design options for a new playground.

In February, Reflections hosted a community engagement event at the park and invited local school children and parents to view the three options and vote on their favourite design.   

 

The “winning” playground is Australian made and features a tree house play structure and two-bay swing set, each with three swings, and a sandstone block perimeter to provide both informal seating and a boundary. The playground’s colour scheme complements and enhances the natural landscape, with timber-look posts and green, beige and brown tones.

 

In addition, the nearby picnic shelter has been refurbished for the community’s enjoyment.

 

Reflections CEO Nick Baker said the community had led the way in designing the playground and families could now enjoy the space feeling proud of a space that they had helped create.

 

“Our holiday park plays a large, supportive role in the Bruns community and our team really loved working alongside residents to bring this playground to life for the enjoyment of everyone,” he said.  

Byron Shire Mayor Sarah Ndiaye said, “Right on the banks of the Brunswick River, this new playground gives local kids the perfect place to climb, explore and let their imaginations run wild.

 

“What makes it particularly special is that local children and parents helped choose the design.

 

“It’s wonderful to see Reflections collaborating with the community and investing in a space that will be enjoyed by local families and visitors for many years to come,” Mayor Ndiaye said.
