Sydney's Historic Cockatoo Island To Become Australia's Most Unique After-Dark Tourism Experience
Fear Island invites visitors to discover Cockatoo Island after sunset through immersive horror, theatre, dining and adventure.
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – One of Australia's most significant heritage destinations is preparing for an extraordinary transformation this August, as Cockatoo Island becomes home to Fear Island, a three-night immersive horror experience unlike anything else in the country.
Running from 28–30 August 2026, Fear Island has been created to showcase Cockatoo Island in a completely new light, encouraging visitors to experience the island after dark through immersive storytelling, theatrical performances and interactive entertainment.
Accessible only by ferry across Sydney Harbour, the experience begins long before guests enter the tunnels, with the journey to the island forming part of the adventure itself.
Rather than simply attending an attraction, visitors are invited to spend an entire evening exploring one of Sydney Harbour's most remarkable destinations.
Discover Cockatoo Island After Dark
By day, Cockatoo Island is celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage-listed destination rich in maritime and convict history.
By night, Fear Island transforms the same industrial landscape, historic buildings and underground passages into the setting for an unforgettable immersive experience.
The island's unique atmosphere provides a backdrop that cannot be recreated in a purpose-built venue, making Fear Island one of Australia's most authentic location-based horror experiences.
A Complete Evening On Sydney Harbour
Fear Island has been designed as a destination event rather than a single attraction.
Visitors can spend the evening enjoying:
• Two immersive horror tunnel experiences
• Ghost Stories of Fear Island by firelight
• More than 30 live performers
• Interactive entertainment and roaming characters
• The Warden's Lost Key island-wide treasure hunt
• Fear Island Fortune Cards
• Death Certificates
• The Missing Persons Wall
• Live contortionist performances
• Horror photo experiences
• Licensed bar, café and food vendors
Guests are encouraged to arrive early, explore the island at their own pace and remain after their tunnel experience to enjoy the complete Fear Island precinct.
A New Tourism Experience For Sydney
Launching alongside the tunnels is Fear Island: The Thriller Dinner, a premium immersive dining experience that combines shared dining, theatrical storytelling and live performance overlooking Sydney Harbour.
Together, the two experiences provide visitors with an entirely new reason to visit Cockatoo Island, particularly during the winter tourism season.
The Warden's Lost Key
Adding another unique tourism element, ticket holders will begin receiving clues via social media one week before the event.
Hidden somewhere on Cockatoo Island will be The Warden's Lost Key.
Guests are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the island before arrival, explore its many pathways and landmarks, and solve the mystery for the chance to win a growing prize pool.
Showcasing One Of Sydney's Greatest Locations
Event Director Monique Annetts said Cockatoo Island was the inspiration behind the event.
"Fear Island could only happen on Cockatoo Island. The island already has an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Australia, and we've embraced that rather than trying to recreate it somewhere else."
"Our goal is to encourage people to spend an entire evening discovering the island
in a completely different way. Guests arrive by ferry, explore the precinct, experience immersive horror, enjoy food and drinks, hear ghost stories and become part of an unforgettable adventure on Sydney Harbour."
"We hope Fear Island becomes another reason for both locals and visitors to experience one of Sydney's most remarkable destinations."
