Exclusive Photography Exhibition Presented by Behind The Gallery Comes to Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia — Wednesday 11th March 2026

Behind The Gallery will present an exclusive exhibition of photography by iconic rock photographer Ross Halfin documenting the career of The Black Crowes, opening in Melbourne on Wednesday 1st April.

Spanning decades of collaboration, the exhibition brings together a curated selection of Halfin’s most striking images of the band — from early moments surrounding their breakthrough in the early 1990s to the commanding stage presence that has made them one of rock’s most enduring live acts.

Now Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees, The Black Crowes remain one of the defining American rock bands of their generation, with a career that has influenced countless artists and continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Many of the photographs featured in the exhibition have never been seen publicly, offering audiences a unique insight into the band’s long relationship with Halfin. Select prints will also be co-signed by Chris and Rich Robinson, further highlighting the significance of the collaboration between photographer and band.

Reflecting on the relationship that produced the work featured in the exhibition, Halfin said:

“I’ve been photographing the Black Crowes more or less since they started and after all these years we’re still working together.

This exhibition features some of the highlights of our long and enjoyable collaboration and includes many of Chris & Rich’s favourite pictures.”

Stephen Dallimore, founder of Behind The Gallery, said the exhibition highlights the cultural importance of music photography.

“Ross Halfin has documented rock history for decades, and his work with The Black Crowes captures the band at some of their most defining moments. This exhibition brings that long collaboration into an audio infused gallery setting, giving audiences the chance to experience these photographs not just as music images, but as cultural artefacts.”

In addition to the Black Crowes collection, the exhibition will include a small curated selection of Halfin’s iconic photography from across rock history, featuring legendary artists including Metallica, Guns N' Roses and Jimmy Page.

All works are museum-quality limited edition archival prints and available to purchase at the gallery.

The exhibition reflects Behind The Gallery’s focus on presenting significant music photography as cultural artefacts, bringing the stories behind some of rock’s most enduring images into a gallery setting.

About Ross Halfin

Ross Halfin is described as one of the world’s foremost rock photographers for more than four decades.

He studied fine art at Wimbledon School of Art in the 1970s, originally intending to become a painter, but found art school “too pretentious and creatively stifling.” Halfin began photographing concerts almost accidentally, sneaking cameras into shows by bands such as The Who, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Man and Free. As music magazines like SoundsMelody Maker and NME covered the emerging punk scene, he photographed groups including The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Adam Ant, The Specials and Blondie.

Over the following decades he travelled globally photographing major rock acts including Metallica, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Guns N’ Roses, Kiss and Mötley Crüe, and also served as an official tour photographer for Paul McCartney, George Harrison and The Who.

His work has appeared on album covers, tour programmes, posters and numerous magazine covers, including an image of AC/DC’s Angus Young on the first issue of Kerrang! magazine.

Beyond music photography, Halfin has also developed a strong body of travel photography, inspired by the landscape painting he studied at art college. Many of these images were later published in the book Sojourner (2011).
