The real issue at Tomago
Climate Council
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRIDAY 31 OCTOBER 2025
The real issue at Tomago
Australia’s largest aluminium smelter, Tomago, faces a significant challenge to remain commercially viable in the years ahead, but renewable energy is not the cause of that challenge.
Furthermore Tomago’s problems can not be solved by simply suggesting majority owner Rio Tinto turn to more climate-polluting coal and gas.
To help explain the above, Climate Councillor Greg Bourne is available for comment.
Greg is a former regional president of BP Australasia and was an energy adviser to former British PM Maggie Thatcher.
Climate Council Senior Adviser Ben McLeod is also available for comment and backgrounding.
