Thiess recently hosted its inaugural, first-of-its-kind Mining HER Future Forum in Singleton, New South Wales, supported by New South Wales Mining, the Careerlinks Empower HER Program and the New South Wales Department of Education’s Educational Pathways Program.

Approximately 120 female students from schools across the Hunter Valley attended the forum to hear from women in mining and discover pathways at Thiess and across the broader industry.

Thiess Group Executive – Australia East Rae O’Brien said: “At Thiess, we’re committed to increasing female participation across our industry – breaking barriers and building long-term successful careers that will shape the future of mining.

“Our commitment, combined with our strong, historic links to the Hunter Valley, are why Thiess was proud to give local students this opportunity to explore the diverse range of roles within our industry and connect directly with professionals working in mining today. Hearing real stories from women in the industry has sparked curiosity and ambition in the students and gave them the confidence and practical guidance to pursue careers in the industry.”

Following an insightful panel discussion featuring Thiess employees sharing their career stories, students participated in interactive sessions and rotated among stalls that showcased roles across engineering, geology, finance, marketing, safety and more.

Thiess Senior Social Performance Advisor Kerrie Howells added: “Mining has traditionally been male-dominated, and Thiess is committed to empowering more women to be part of the industry, encouraging the next generation to challenge stereotypes and explore diverse career pathways.

“Hopefully, what students once thought mining was – big trucks, dust and hard hats – has expanded to include opportunities that align with their individual ambitions.”

Through community initiatives such as the Mining HER Future Forum, Thiess continues to invest in the Hunter Valley region while shaping a more diverse and inclusive future for the mining industry.
