ANC accelerates past 100 EVs, powering Australia’s last-mile electric delivery shift
Helping customers meet ESG goals and supporting driver growth
Sydney, Australia: Local last-mile delivery* specialist ANC has surpassed a major national milestone, growing its electric vehicle (EV) fleet to over 100 – one of Australia’s largest electric last-mile delivery fleets. Achieved ahead of schedule, the rollout marks a breakthrough in overcoming long-standing barriers to commercial EV adoption and is driving big wins for the environment, small business drivers, and customers advancing their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) targets.
The 100+ EVs now represent 12.5 per cent of ANC’s total fleet, with the company targeting 30 per cent by 2028. Another 50-plus EVs are set to join the fleet in the next 12 months, putting ANC on track to well exceed its 112-vehicle target by 2026. This momentum is being driven by a $12.8 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), awarded under its Driving the Nation program**, supporting ANC’s Project Spark initiative, launched in June 2024 to accelerate EV and charging infrastructure rollout.
“Since our first drivers switched to EVs in 2022, dozens of ANC Delivery Professionals have helped reshape last-mile delivery in Australia,” says ANC CEO Joe Sofra. “Project Spark shows that with the right support – education, grants and strategy – you can cut emissions and boost income. We’re not just enabling sustainability; we’re building stronger small businesses. Many drivers lack the capital to scale alone, so this provides a clear, supported path to grow.
“But to further accelerate adoption across the sector, we need to lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and improve access to finance. Tailored EV loans and dedicated insurance products could make the transition viable for more drivers and speed up Australia’s clean transport shift.”
To help achieve its goals, ANC has focused on several key strategies:
- Partnering with energy providers to deliver flexible, scalable charging options – including depot-based and public DC fast charging.
- Collaborating with OEMs and body builders to customise EVs for the unique demands of last-mile delivery in Australia.
- Educating customers on the operational and environmental benefits of EVs.
- Removing cost and knowledge barriers to enable small business drivers to confidently transition to EVs and grow their businesses.
Customer collaboration driving ESG success
The shift is also embraced by ANC’s customers to help meet their ESG goals. One of its earliest EV delivery partners, Who Gives A Crap, has been working with ANC since the start of its program, trialing EVs in real-life delivery scenarios to understand charging capacity, charging needs, route planning and driver feedback.
“Hitting 100 EVs in ANC’s fleet is a huge milestone – not just for ANC, but for us as a partner and for sustainable logistics in Australia more broadly. It represents a shared commitment to accelerating the transition to low-emissions delivery and proves what’s possible when businesses collaborate with purpose,” says Bernie Wiley, Sustainability Director at Who Gives A Crap. “Delivery is a critical part of our supply chain and makes up over 10 per cent of our Scope 3 emissions. Transitioning to EVs isn’t just symbolic, it’s a practical step toward our goal of reducing emissions. In the past financial year alone, we saved over 28,000kg of CO₂ through EV deliveries, and we expect to more than double that impact this year as our EV fleet expands.
“[ANC’s] milestone proves that reducing emissions in logistics is achievable – and scalable. It signals to the industry that there’s real demand for EV delivery, which helps create momentum not just for adoption but for increased vehicle supply and lower upfront costs as demand grows. The more companies that follow suit, the faster we’ll see vehicle availability increase and upfront costs come down, which benefits everyone.”
Another key customer embracing the change is IKEA, which has been working with ANC to introduce EVs into its Australian last-mile network. “At IKEA, we’re committed to achieving 100 per cent zero-emissions delivery as soon as possible,” says Alexandra Kelly, Zero Emissions Project Leader, IKEA Australia and New Zealand. “It’s an ambitious goal, and partnering with like-minded organisations like ANC Delivers, who share our vision for a clean energy future, has been essential. In Australia, over the past three years we’ve grown from five per cent to 76 per cent of customer deliveries made via zero-emissions vehicles. This transition comes with many unknowns and evolving challenges, but we believe that when we move together, we move faster.”
Driven to grow
One success story is Navroop Singh, among ANC’s first Delivery Professionals to switch to EVs. He now runs eight EV vans and employs nine drivers, crediting ANC’s Project Spark for accelerating his growth. “Project Spark gave us knowledge, tools and encouragement,” he says. “I have happier customers, healthier drivers, and a stronger bottom line. People ask about the EVs – it shows we’re part of something bigger: it reflects ANC’s and IKEA’s sustainability values.”
According to Sofra, driving professionals like Navroop are part of a broader shift. “EVs bring a level of quality and professionalism that’s changing the perception of last-mile delivery,” he says. “They’re quiet, clean and modern. For many, the chance to drive an EV and earn more isn’t just appealing, it’s a step up. This shift is helping drivers move from independent contractors and sole traders to principal contractors running their own companies and employing other driving professionals. It’s attracting great people and providing a genuine pathway to build something of their own.”
Next-gen charging for last-mile EVs
ANC uses a mixed modal charging strategy, including portable DC chargers in locations where depot upgrades are limited by infrastructure costs and civil works. This flexible approach ensures reliable, cost-effective access to charging for delivery professionals.
Looking ahead, ANC is committed to developing dedicated “park ‘n charge” hubs designed specifically for delivery professionals. These hubs will combine secure parking, fast charging, and space to recharge, connect and keep drivers’ businesses moving. The first sites are now in planning, focusing on key delivery corridors. “This is about rethinking what a service station looks like in an electric future,” adds Sofra. “It’s about infrastructure designed for the people who power last-mile delivery, and we want it to benefit the entire industry.”
* Last-mile delivery refers to the final stage of the delivery process, where goods are transported from a distribution centre or warehouse to the customer’s doorstep.
**ARENA’s Driving the Nation program supports the rollout of zero-emission transport solutions across Australia. It funds projects that accelerate EV adoption, expand charging infrastructure, and reduce transport emissions as part of the national push toward net zero by 2050.
