Time to partner with business to deliver growth
Committee for Melbourne
Melbourne’s global competitiveness depends on a dynamic and thriving business sector – and that means enabling growth, not taxing it.
We welcome the Government’s commitment to no new or increased taxes, which is a vital step toward providing businesses certainty around their investment.
The Committee particularly welcomes the $318 million investment to provide free public transport for all children under 18, the extension of free weekend travel for seniors and the broader investment in Victoria’s transport network. These are smart, inclusive measures that will increase access, support mobility and bring more people into the heart of Melbourne – the gateway to our state’s economic and cultural life.
The Government’s investment in the Economic Growth Statement is a welcome step forward, and Committee for Melbourne is proud to support this work through the policy taskforces we have established. These taskforces will develop actionable, business-backed recommendations that align directly with the Government’s stated growth priorities.
To be attributed to Committee for Melbourne Chief Executive Scott Veenker:
“We welcome the renewed focus on fiscal discipline – but now we need action, collaboration and delivery. A business-led recovery is the only path out of the State’s financial challenges, and stabilising the debt and wining back confidence is the key to achieving it.
“The investment in public transport and free travel for young people and seniors is exactly the kind of inclusive, city-strengthening initiative Melbourne needs right now. It supports mobility, equity and revitalisation.
“Our policy taskforces are designed to dovetail directly with the Economic Growth Statement. This is structured, solution-focused work that we’ll deliver to government to help shape implementation.
“We urge the Government to work with industry as true partners, not simply as revenue sources.”
