Key Facts:
  • Trading 212, the UK's largest stockbroker by active client numbers, is expanding into Australia, following successful growth in the UK and Germany
  • The platform offers zero brokerage on share and ETF trading, no monthly or annual platform fees, and fractional investing from just $1, positioning itself against traditional brokers that rely on high fees and complexity.
  • Trading 212 pays 5.2% per annum interest daily on uninvested AUD cash balances as a permanent product feature, and charges a foreign exchange fee of 0.15% — roughly a quarter of the typical market rate.
  • The platform provides access to 16 global exchanges spanning the US, UK, and Europe, including stocks not widely available through local competitors, such as major European companies like SAP.
  • Multi-currency wallets allow clients to hold and receive funds in AUD, GBP, EUR, and USD without converting each time, further reducing costs for investors accessing international markets.

Trading 212, the UK's largest stockbroker by active client numbers, is making Australia the next stop in its global growth story, following the same expansion playbook that has already fuelled major growth in the UK and, more recently, Germany.

After last year's rapid scale-up in Germany, the company says it identified a clear gap in the Australian market: affordable, low-barrier access to UK, European and US shares, at a time when many Australians and in particular younger investors are searching for lower-cost ways to start building wealth. As part of that push, Trading 212 is stepping up its local marketing and investment in the Australian business from its base in Sydney.

"Our foreign exchange fee is around a quarter of the typical market rate," said Eric Peterson, CEO of Trading 212 Australia. "A lot of platforms in this category make their margin by holding onto clients' uninvested cash rather than paying interest on it. We've taken the opposite approach, we pay 5.2 per cent back to clients on their AUD cash, and it's a permanent feature of the product, not a promotional rate that gets wound back after a few months."

Among the features underpinning Trading 212's Australian offer:

  • Zero brokerage on share and ETF trading, with fractional investing from $1

  • No monthly or annual platform fees

  • 5.2% p.a. interest paid daily on uninvested AUD cash balances

  • 0.15% foreign exchange fee for currency conversion which is roughly a quarter of typical market rates

  • Multi-currency wallets, allowing clients to hold and be paid out in AUD, GBP, EUR and USD without converting each time

  • Access to 16 global exchanges, spanning the US, UK and Europe including stocks not available through several local competitors, such as major European names like SAP

"Sixteen global exchanges puts us well ahead of most players in this market," Peterson said. "It means Australian investors can get direct exposure to offshore names that aren't accessible through most local platforms, German industrials, US technology stocks, and other markets that have typically required an international broker or a much higher cost base to reach."

Peterson said the model reflects a broader shift in how the company positions itself against incumbent brokers.

"I've been in this industry a long time, and the traditional model has relied on complexity and high fees to keep people out. We've built our business on the opposite premise: transparency, low costs, and giving people direct access to markets rather than managing it for them at a price."
