Treaties Committee to hold second public hearing into Manipulation of Sports treaty

Parliament of Australia

The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties will hold a second public hearing today for its inquiry into the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions (the Macolin Convention).

The Macolin Convention is the only multilateral agreement focused on preventing match-fixing, corruption, and other manipulation in sport. It establishes a framework for countries to work together with sports organisations, betting operators, and competition organisers to detect, prevent and punish manipulation of sports competitions.

Committee Chair, Ms Lisa Chesters MP, said, ‘Australia has a proud reputation for sports integrity. This inquiry will investigate how the Macolin Convention could strengthen our ability to tackle match-fixing and betting-related corruption. The Committee is interested in how the treaty could contribute to Australia’s commitment to international cooperation on sports integrity.’

The Committee will examine whether the Macolin Convention contributes to Australia’s national interests and aligns with Australia’s international policies and objectives.

The Committee will hear evidence from a number of stakeholders.
