Perth, March 2026 – The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Respiratory Science (ANZSRS) will bring together clinicians, researchers and scientists from across Australia, New Zealand and overseas to join the TSANZSRS Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) 2026, happening from 27 to 31 March at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
This five-day meeting will showcase the latest research, translational science and multidisciplinary collaboration under two themes: Lungs Under the Microscope, led by TSANZ, and Breathing Through the Ages: From Infancy to Late Adulthood, led by ANZSRS.
Throughout the conference, delegates can expect a comprehensive program of plenary sessions, sponsored symposia, poster presentations, an industry exhibition, and networking events. The program will address current challenges and new priorities in respiratory health.
TSANZSRS ASM 2026’s postgraduate workshop program on Friday, 27 March, offers targeted professional development for clinicians, scientists, and trainees. Workshops cover topics including interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism management, nicotine cessation integration into clinical practice, lung transplantation, and breathlessness in competitive athletes, among others. Delegates can add workshops to their registration or select them when registering for the meeting.
Internationally recognised experts will lead the TSANZSRS ASM 2026 scientific program on Saturday, 28 March. The event opens with Professor James Chalmers (United Kingdom) discussing experimental medicine in pulmonary disease, and Dr Lida Hariri (United States) sharing new techniques for early disease detection, diagnosis, and monitoring. Professor Natasha Smallwood, President of TSANZ, and Dr Kimberley Wang, Chair of the TSANZ Organising Committee, will join them at the TSANZ Opening Plenary. Hon Meredith Hammat, Western Australia’s Minister for Health and Mental Health, will give a special address on the importance of respiratory health as a national and state priority. In the ANZSRS Plenary, Professor Rosa Faner (Spain), Professor Erik Melén (Sweden), and Associate Professor Shannon Simpson (Australia) will present advances in respiratory science throughout the lifespan.
Reflecting the meeting’s strong international focus, the broader scientific program features speakers from Europe, North America, and South America, including experts from the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, Sweden, and Brazil, as well as leading Australian and New Zealand specialists.
The program includes the Wunderly Oration by Professor Simon Gandevia (Australia), honouring his contributions to respiratory and neuromuscular science.
Excellence and emerging leadership in respiratory research will also be recognised over the five-day conference through the presentation of major TSANZ awards and fellowships. These include the TSANZ-funded awards, the TSANZ GSK Clinical Research Award, the TSANZ Chiesi Advancing Women in Respiratory Health Award, and career-shaping fellowships and grants supported by the Cure4CF Foundation, Asthma Australia and the National Asthma Council Australia. The meeting will also host the presentation of long-standing awards recognising excellence in research, Indigenous lung health, paediatric respiratory medicine, early-career development and international scientific engagement, reinforcing ASM’s role in supporting the next generation of respiratory leaders.
The ASM social program will provide opportunities for collegial engagement outside the scientific sessions, including Welcome Receptions on 27 March, the ANZSRS Dinner at the Western Australian Museum Hackett Hall Gallery on 28 March, ANZSRS Sunday Drinks on 29 March, and the TSANZ ASM Gala Dinner with a Wild West theme on 30 March.
The ASM 2026 Organising Committee, co-chaired by Dr Kimberley Wang (TSANZ) and Terese Twomey (ANZSRS), is pleased to convene this distinguished assembly of experts in Perth to accelerate scientific innovation and improve respiratory outcomes across Australia, New Zealand, and internationally.
