US election result: climate analysis
Australian Conservation Foundation
In response to the results of the 2024 US Presidential election, the Australian Conservation Foundation has available spokespeople for analysis on what a Trump Presidency will mean for Australia and the climate crisis.
Available for interview:
Kelly O'Shanassy, CEO
“There is no sugar coating the result of the US Presidential election and the impact it will have on climate and nature. A Trump Presidency and the possibility of a Republican controlled Congress will be bad for the global effort to tackle the climate crisis. But the American people, progressive businesses and civil society have power, and they will redouble their efforts for a better world.
While fossil fuel companies will be emboldened by the result, we can't forget that climate action and nature protection is hard wired into the US legal and economic system. US businesses are not going to stand back and allow their competitive advantage on renewables and clean technology be lost. Most of the Inflation Reduction Act funding went to Republican states, so there will be a call to keep those opportunities and jobs.
It's the same story globally, and here in Australia. The clean and green transition can be slowed, but it is unstoppable.”
Gavan McFadzean, Climate Program Manager
“With the election of President Trump the world will lose America’s leadership in lifting global ambition on climate action, while blocking efforts at home to reduce their domestic emissions as the world’s second largest climate polluter.
We will also likely see an alarming escalation in US fossil fuel exports which will undermine the essential task to transition global energy systems to renewables.
It is now more critical than ever that Australia, as one of world’s the top three exporters of coal and gas, to show leadership at home and abroad to rapidly phaseout its fossil fuel exports and announce a strong science aligned 2035 emissions reduction target."
