The Victorian TAFE Association (VTA) today pays tribute to the Minister for Skills and TAFE Gayle Tierney following her decision to step down from her ministerial responsibilities.

During her decade of service, Minister Tierney oversaw a transformative era for the Victorian TAFE Network. Her leadership was instrumental in taking the public vocational education system to a new, modern era with 45 new and upgraded TAFE campuses across the state.

The landmark introduction of Free TAFE has supported almost 230,000 students since 2019, a reform that has now become national.

Quotes attributable to Alex White, CEO, Victorian TAFE Association:

“Minister Tierney has been a tireless champion for the TAFE sector, moving  public vocational education to the centre of Victoria's economic and social policy.

“Her legacy of Free TAFE is the thousands of Victorians now working in decent, secure jobs because the barriers to quality training were removed, and has become a permanent fixture for the state’s workforce training landscape.”

Quotes attributable to Michael Gorton AM, Chair, Victorian TAFE Association:

"The Minister's tenure was defined by a profound respect for TAFE as a public asset and a primary vehicle for Victoria's prosperity and social mobility.

“She leaves the sector with modernised facilities and a strategic importance that has set the standard for vocational education reform across Australia.

“On behalf of the VTA, I thank the Minister for her collaborative approach with the sector and her unwavering belief that TAFE should always be an equal first choice for students.
