WA Bakehouse Puts the Heat on for Great Aussie Pie Challenge!

The annual Great Aussie Pie Competition got underway today, with four days of heated judging in Melbourne. The Great Aussie Pie Competition is a cornerstone of Australia’s baking industry, attracting hundreds of entrants each year.
Open to bakers and pastry chefs from all corners of Australia, this is one of the most anticipated events in the industry, celebrating the craftsmanship and creativity of the nation’s best pie makers. WA’s Miami Bakehouse team spent the weekend finalising its entries that jet their way to Melbourne for judging on Wednesday, this week.
The competition showcases Aussie bakers’ talents with one of our nation’s most beloved foods—the pie. From traditional flavours to bold new creations, this competition highlights the artistry and technical skill required to make the perfect pie.
“Our Miami team are regular entrants to this competition, and we can’t wait to have our work judged by the panel of industry experts.
“They assess the pies so carefully, looking at every aspect of the pastry and fillings. There are literally only single points between first, second and third,” explained David Palmer, Co-owner.
The judging criteria include:
- Appearance: The pie’s presentation and overall appeal.
- Pastry: The quality, texture, and flavour of the pastry, including its consistency and how well it holds up to the filling.
- Filling: The taste, balance, and originality of the filling. Judges look for fresh ingredients, bold flavours, and innovative combinations.
- Creativity: The uniqueness of the pie, including the use of traditional and non-traditional ingredients to create something truly special.
Each pie is scored individually, and the highest-rated entries receive awards across major categories, including Best Meat Pie, Best Gourmet Pie, Best Game Pie, and more.
Miami Bakehouse has a rich history of participating in the Great Aussie Pie Competition, consistently delivering award-winning pies that celebrate both tradition and innovation. With over 1000 awards from 20 years of baking in Western Australia, Miami is no stranger to the competitive standards of the event.
The Great Aussie Pie Competition is not just about winning awards—it’s a celebration of the enduring love Australians have for pies. It brings together bakers from every state and territory, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and friendly competition.
“Our team is always excited to work up new flavours and recipes for competition time and its our customers who benefit the most, as we continue to perfect our craft. Some of the recipes this year include our spicy Singaporean Chilli Prawn pie and our Kangaroo, Guinness and Vegetables made with genuine Irish Guinness,” said David Palmer.
