Weixin Pay, formerly known as WeChat Pay, is pleased to announce its brand-new partnership with David Jones, Australia’s iconic premium department store giant. All 16 flagship and popular David Jones stores across 6 major cities in Australia have fully enabled Weixin Pay, providing a convenient and seamless digital shopping experience for Chinese tourists and overseas Chinese living across Australia.
Data shows that China has become one of the fastest-growing international source markets for inbound tourism to Australia. From June 2024 to May 2025, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Australia approached 950,000, with a year-on-year increase of 29%. Meanwhile, Chinese tourists demonstrated astonishing spending power—a per-capita spend that steadily ranks first among all international tourists to Australia.
Weixin Pay has partnered with David Jones to better support Chinese consumers as they look to purchase Australian products and services. The 16 stores that have integrated Weixin Pay through this partnership cover popular tourist and residential cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, and the Gold Coast. The rollout not only covers CBD flagships such as Elizabeth Street in Sydney and Bourke Street Mall in Melbourne, but also Chadstone, the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere, helping Chinese tourists shop at top destinations with ease. Meanwhile, in areas with high concentrations of Chinese students and new immigrants, Weixin Pay has focused on enabling key stores such as Chatswood Chase and Burwood in Sydney, as well as Doncaster and Glen Waverley in Melbourne, so Chinese shoppers can pay with the method they know best and value. Now with Weixin Pay supported, there’s no need for Chinese customers of David Jones to exchange cash or use a physical bank card; they can simply open Weixin/WeChat to complete their payments with a preferential real-time exchange rate.
“‘Travel the World with Your Mobile Phone’ is not only a vision, but also a real need of Chinese tourists,” said Monica Zheng, Managing Director of Weixin Pay Oceania. “We hope that Chinese tourists can experience digital services in the Southern Hemisphere that are no different from those in China. This is not only about payment alignment, but also about connecting cultures and service experiences with virtually ‘zero friction.’”
David Jones General Manager of Financial Services, Steve Price added: “Enabling Weixin Pay is an important measure for us to listen to customer needs and embrace digital innovation. Chinese consumers are not only an international customer segment we value highly but also an important part of the local community.
To mark the Chinese New Year, Weixin Pay has also launched a Year of the Horse Chinese New Year campaign, which will run from February 9 to March 9, offering exchange-rate vouchers and bringing festive perks to both visiting Chinese shoppers and local Chinese customers.
In the future, Weixin Pay will continue to deepen its engagement in the cross-border payment ecosystem, work with overseas merchants to explore more cooperation and further promote a convenient and efficient global digital ecosystem with mutual empowerment.
