The Cancer Society has announced that $86,000 was raised from this year’s Relay for Life in Whanganui, following a successful event supported by Rapid Relief Team (RRT).
The annual Relay brings together the Whanganui community to show solidarity, remembrance and commitment to a cancer-free future while raising crucial funds for the Cancer Society.
This year’s community event saw up to 600 people take part, which included 95 cancer survivors.
RRT volunteers cooked and served a free lunch for all participants.
This involvement helped ensure every dollar fundraised by teams can be directed back into Cancer Society services, including support for people receiving care and their whānau, as well as cancer prevention and education programmes for the wider Whanganui community.
Notable achievements at this year’s event included All about Whanau, a local fundraising group, exceeding their goal through a series of initiatives, including a yard sale, an art auction and an Easter raffle.
The Suzuki Swifts also collected significant donations throughout the event, while Whanganui High School raised the most among participating schools.
With the event reaching almost 70 per cent of its $125,000 fundraising target, organisers praised RRT's contribution to the weekend's success.
"RRT’s support and involvement were absolutely instrumental”, said Belinda Pilcher, Event Coordinator for Whanganui’s Relay for Life.
“The event was a great success, not only for raising significant funds but for bringing the community together for a great cause. We are so grateful for RRT being there to help make it as impactful as possible.”
Paul Simmons, RRT New Zealand's General Manager, said:
“Relay for Life brings together the Whanganui community to support those affected by cancer, and RRT is proud to play a part in that.
“Our volunteers were honoured to support the event for survivors and their supporters.
These are members of our community who inspire us all with their courage and resilience.”
