World Premiere under Outback Skies: Great Barrier Reef Orchestra and William Barton unite for landmark Festival Finale

The Great Barrier Reef Orchestra (GBRO) will deliver a defining cultural moment for regional Queensland, presenting a powerful world premiere collaboration with internationally acclaimed Kalkadunga musician, composer and didgeridoo virtuoso William Barton as the finale of the 2026 Festival of Outback Skies – Music by the Lake.

Taking place on Sunday 3 May in Hughenden, the concert, a collaboration with Queensland Music Trails’ Outback Trail, will feature the world premiere of Memories of the Ocean Flow (for chamber orchestra), a major new work written especially for and commissioned by the Orchestra, by Barton himself. Blending the rich textures of chamber orchestra with the ancient, resonant voice of Barton’s yidaki and didgeridoo, the performance promises a deeply moving musical journey grounded in Country, culture and connection. The work weaves together vocals, didgeridoo, guitar and spoken word, reflecting the shifting rhythms between reef and mainland ecosystems.

This landmark event comes at a moment of significant international recognition for the Orchestra, with Artistic Director Theodore Kuchar recently named among Musical America’s Top 30 Professionals of the Year for 2025, a prestigious global honour that places GBRO firmly on the world stage.

The performance also forms part of the Orchestra’s 25th anniversary year, marking its evolution from an ambitious regional ensemble into a cornerstone of North Queensland’s cultural identity and one of Australia’s leading community orchestras.

President of the GBRO and acclaimed Australian musician Dene Olding said the performance represents a powerful meeting of place and story.

“This work brings together the spirit of reef and outback, a coming together of culture, environment and community that feels deeply close to home,” Mr Olding said. “In sharing it, we hope to connect communities like meeting currents, and inspire a sense of wonder and pride in this extraordinary part of the world. We are thrilled to travel to Hughenden for the Festival of Outback Skies and to present the world premiere of Memories of the Ocean Flow alongside William Barton.”

For more than two decades, William Barton has built an extraordinary international career, performing with leading orchestras across the globe and appearing at landmark events including Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey, Anzac Cove and the Beijing Olympics. His work continues to expand the possibilities of the didgeridoo, bringing Indigenous culture and contemporary composition together in powerful new ways.

Queensland Music Trails has partnered with the Festival of Outback Skies to present Music by the Lake.

The GBRO continues to thrive thanks to the support of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, Townsville City Council, private donors and the wider community, sustaining its role as both a professional artistic platform and a unifying cultural force in Townsville and beyond. Following the Festival of Outback Skies, the Orchestra’s 2026 season continues with the return of Theodore Kuchar for its annual Chamber Music Concert, a Townsville Civic Theatre performance featuring Oksana Hretchyn performing Barber’s Violin Concerto, the much-loved Queens Gardens Concert in August, and the “Stories” Concert in October with Graeme Connors and the IRAR Band as part of the North Australian Festival of Arts.

Audiences are warmly invited to be part of this milestone year.
