WYNDHAM RESIDENTS WIN IN LATEST TRANCHE OF BUS UPGRADES
Sustainable Cities - Better Buses Campaign
This last Sunday, the government opened the brand-new West Tarneit station, increasing access to fast travel from Wyndham to the city, Footscray and Sunshine. Critically, the bus network has been improved with improved services running from day one of the new station.
Bus 182 on Davis Road has been upgraded to run every 20 minutes all week, with a direct West Tarneit station connection, and a new route 186 connects West Tarneit with Tarneit Station via North Tarneit, running every 20 minutes.
Also in Wyndham, route 194 through Mambourin and Harpley has been extended over the new Ison Road Bridge, opening at the start of last week, also running every 20 minutes on weekdays, however unfortunately dropping to every 40 minutes on the weekend.
This new approach to delivering services concurrently with infrastructure is a welcome change to the government’s public transport approach, following a decade of big build projects finishing with no improved bus services.
It is likely that these 3 new almost-frequent routes become some of Melbourne's best utilised, based on strong performance from Wyndham's existing almost-frequent routes. These routes will help residents in Melbourne’s often neglected growth areas access jobs and services, whether that be across Melbourne in the city or in local centres such as Tarneit and Werribee.
The next step is more broader reform, improving services across the rest of Wyndham and the West more broadly, in areas such as Point Cook and Melton.
“These new services show that the government is starting to listen to the community,” said Werribee resident and Sustainable Cities spokesperson Grace Eyre. “It’s now time for MPs and candidates across the West to get together and unite behind a frequent bus network for all of the West”
