Youth are the future electors

Elections dominate. Falling over posters, is a trip hazard. Youth will be the voters in the next elections. Educators and teachers from all sectors are driving outreach to students to read and explore their ideas as they write.

With author and mentor Susanne Gervay OAM and innovative teachers like Sarah Peachman and Kate Wealleans, they join together to give voice to our future voters and leaders. These teachers established the Bangalay Literary Festival, to advocate for a voice by young people about environment, ideas and where they see the world going.

‘In the student publication, their stories are moving, exciting, diverse. The talent of young writers shows their engagement with community and the future,’ says Susanne Gervay.

The Bangalay stories in the published anthology, are from Ankita Sriram The Forest High School to Bianca Lyme Hunters Hill High School and 22 more literary creations. These teachers are bringing youth voice to future elections.

Youth writing festivals have been growing unlocking the talent of youth. National Young Writers Festival located in Newcastle, is a festival made by young writers, for young writers. An annual event, the National Young Writers Festival aims to be accessible for all through a completely free program, and explores ‘writing’ in its broadest sense, including art installations, readings, workshops, and more. This festival is the largest gathering of young writers in the country, allowing youth to share their ideas and hone their creative skills.

Somerset College hosts Storyfest in Queensland, with a three-day-long festival that kicks off with a prologue party, workshops for the kids, and competitions diving into reading and writing. They provide aspiring writers with opportunities for development, with additional novella and poetry competitions.

Whitsunday Anglican College hosts Whitsunday Voices Literary Festival. The Whitsunday Voice Youth Literature Festival, held in the Whitsunday Anglican School,  inspires over 5000 students each year.

Educators and teachers are driving the creative reach to all youth to create works and discussion. Many authors such as Susanne Gervay have joined campaigns as ambassadors for reading and writing such as Australia Reads, Books in Homes Australia, Hilarie Lindsay Short Story Competition for Australian School Students, Nan Manefield Young Writers Award, Banjo Paterson Writing Awards, RD Walshe Memorial Writing for the Environment Prize, Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards, Whitlam Institute within Western Sydney University competition ‘What Matters?’ and many others.

'We need to look to the future and so our youngest electors are informed and engaged' says Susanne Gervay.
